MockingBoard

An NFL mock draft site where fans draft together, build big boards and write scouting reports.

MockingBoard is an NFL Draft site for people who live for draft season. Fans run mock drafts, build big boards of prospects and write scouting reports, then see how their calls held up against the real draft. One of our engineers built it on their own time. It started as a Discord bot for running mock drafts in chat.

What it does

  • Mock drafts: solo 32-team mocks with trades, or live drafts with up to 32 friends. No account needed to start.
  • Scouting: a drag-and-drop big board builder, graded scouting reports and prospect pages with stats and combine data.
  • Research: team pages, a trade calculator built on value models, a contract builder and the live draft order.
  • A yearly mock draft contest, scored against the real draft.

Stats and fantasy

Two sister sites share the same data. MockingBoard Stats covers 28 seasons of play by play and answers plain-English football questions by writing a database query, then shows the query and the rows behind every answer, so it never does math in its head. MockingBoard Fantasy runs season-long leagues with scoring you can trace: every point links back to a stat event, a rule and a correction log.

Smart Data's own fantasy football league runs on MockingBoard Fantasy this season.

How it's built

One person builds and maintains it. The stats come from open football data (nflverse and CollegeFootballData), and the site publishes its own free datasets, including the community consensus board and contest accuracy. New metrics ship with their reliability numbers printed next to them. No ads and no data selling.
